Transportation

The nearest airport is Rostock-Laage (http://www.rostock-airport.de), but being a smaller airport only very few direct flight are available. The airport is about 33 kilometers away with a Bus connection to the city.

Larger airports which can be reached by train are Hamburg and Berlin. The medium sized airport Lübeck is also an option.
Hamburg: from the airport to the train station takes 25 minutes (Bus or local train, leaving every 10 minutes). From there to Rostock takes between 1:50 and 2:30 hours and trains leave about every hour.
Berlin: there are two main airports Berlin-Schönefeld and Berlin-Tegel. From Schönefeld to the main train station it takes 28 minutes. From Berlin main train station it takes between 2:23 and 3:30 hours to get to Rostock. Also from Airport Berlin-Tegel to Rostock takes a minimum of about 3 hours.
Lübeck: often also denoted Hamburg(Lübeck). Mainly budget airlines with Baltic connection to Stockholm and Danzig. From the airport to the main train station takes about 10 minutes. From there to Rostock takes about 1:50 or 2:30 depending on train.
If we now your flight time we can try to organize a pickup at Hamburg and/or Lübeck airport with a BSH car. One car is already scheduled from Hamburg airport on Monday afternoon and back on Thursday afternoon.

Apart from train and plane there is also the possibility to reach Rostock by ship. There are direct connections from Gedser (one way about 2h), Trelleborg (~6-7 h), Gdynia (~12h) and Helsinki (~26h). From St. Petersburg and Ventspils it is possible to take a direct ferry to Lübeck or Sassnitz.

Within the city there is a good local transportation network.

Leisure/ Tourism

For accompanying persons or if there is the wish to spend some more days in or near Rostock, there is ample things to do. Spend some days at the Sea in Warnemünde, visit the amber museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten, take a steam train to Heiligendamm where the G8 met in 2007 or play a round of golf. For a day trip you can visit the nice old city of Stralsund with its maritime museum, or drive to Peenemünde where you can inform yourself about early rocket technology. And lots more.
